Legion Hardcover News Archive
This page is an archive of all of the news that relates to the Ghostbusters Legion hardcover book to be published by 88MPH Studios (owned solely by Sebastien Clavet). The intention of this page is to document the status of the book and its multi-year history so that all pre-order customers will not be left in the dark about the item that they purchased. All of the information that appears on this page comes from public sources. This includes, but is not limited to: the official 88MPH Studios website, Sebastien's Weaver Hall forum, the 88MPH and Weaver Hall newsletters, and public WHOIS records. Understandably there are some customers who are annoyed that the book still has not been published yet and their money is Missing in Action. Since I have nothing to do with the book, please stop e-mailing me about it. Sebastien's contact information is provided below, along with some information should you choose to file a complaint against him. This is the only advise I can give you. In January 2007, Sebastien added a page for the hardcover to the 88MPH website. As of January 2008, there's still no content on it. Although the full text is below, I have summarized the news from June 26, 2005 to January 26, 2008, and added my comments to detail the scam this has become, in this forum post I wrote (alt url).
January 28, 2005 I placed a pre-order for one copy of the Legion hardcover through Graham Cracker Comics. Cost: $24.95 for the book, $5.00 for shipping, $29.95 total. June 26, 2005 Date: Sun, 26 Jun 2005 23:35:38 -0600 Subject: 88MPH News Message From: 88MPH News (noreply@88mphstudios.com) Hello Ghostheads! Here's a quick update on the Legion Hard Cover Trade. I apologize for the redundant information but I rather keep you all informed. I'll go point by point : -The books are not printed yet, hence have not started to ship either. -As soon as the book are printed (this summer) I will email you all so you know exactly when they are on your way. -All Diamond Comics Distributors orders are canceled. If you ordered through your local comic book store then it's 100% sure that you will not get your copy. -All Graham Crakcers Comics orders are good and you don't need to email them about it since they got all info on file. As soon as we ship them their order they will ship your orders accordingly. -Aside Graham Cracker Comics the only way to get this book is through my website : http://www.88mphstudios.com and click on the banner to order your copy. -Only 1000 copies will be printed. Graham Cracker Comics have ordered through us 300 copies, and we have about 350 orders. Leaving 350 books available for order. Once they are sold it'll be over since I won't be reprinting this trade in either hard or soft cover format. -If you wish to order with my website and you are not sure if the shipping and handling is not high enough due to your remote location, don't let it stop you from ordering. I will honor ALL orders wherever you are and I will not refrain from shipping even if the cost of doing so is higher than what is on the pre-order page. This is my pledge to all GB fans that want to be certain to get a copy. -Be part of the growing Ghostbusters community and visit www.weaverhall.com and discuss with other Ghostheads about your favorite movie :) If you got any question please be sure to email me using the Contact form on my website! Best Regards
Sebastien Clavet July 25, 2005 By: Clavet Posted: Mon Jul 25, 2005 12:20 pm Location: Quebec City, Canada Yeah an update is long overdue, I shall send and 88MPH newsletter soon. In the meantime here's a small update. 1. For those new here and wondering, 88MPH is my company. I run it alone. No secretary, no big office, just me and my own cash and that's it. If you want to blame anyone, blame me. 2. The ongoing series is on indefinite hiatus and I have no idea when it could start, or even if it ever will. 3. The Legion hard cover is not printed yet, when I print it I will then let everyone know about it. Thanks Sebastien (originally published here: http://www.weaverhall.com/viewtopic.php?t=117) September 24, 2005 Date: Sat, 24 Sep 2005 22:29:55 -0600 Subject: GB News Message From: GB News (noreply@88mphstudios.com) Dear Ghostheads, I must begin this message by apologizing for a long overdue update. I am aware that many concerns over lack of news were expressed these past few weeks and I hope this update will answer some if not all of them. First I'd like to address the delay in publishing the Legion Hard Cover. It is without question than I never anticipated such delay and again I must apologize for it. The reason this is taking so long is that I am awaiting one final answer before going to press with it. I cannot confirm if the answer will be positive but the risk is worth the wait in my opinion and once the answer is known (positive or negative) I will announce it publicly. For those wondering, this is regarding the postface. I must stress that the reason for the delay is not financial, but regarding the answer in question. As some of you may know I am now working for a printer so it is obvious the printing side of things is not a problem. Next updates until final solid release date will be made every week, I expect the answer to come to me within 2 weeks, only then will I be able to go to print whether the answer being positive or not. Best Regards

(originally published on the 88MPH website) January 28, 2006 It is now 1 YEAR since I placed the pre-order for the Legion hardcover through Graham Cracker Comics. January 31, 2006 Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 18:53:24 -0700 Subject: 88MPH NEWS Message From: 88MPH NEWS (noreply@88mphstudios.com) Hello Everyone! Long time no "talk", mea culpa as they say. Mistakes were done, lessons were learned and here we are. First off, the Hard Cover situation. The only reason why it is impossibly delayed (not canceled) is caused by a low ordering versus a high printing cost. Now is it fans fault ? Hell no. Is it my fault ? Who else really, so yes. I probably should have done it in soft cover first, maybe I should have done more advertizing, I should have done more of this and less of that. At the end of the day what is important to know is when do you get your copy. The only way for me to compensate for the low ordering is to finance the difference myself, hence making this process very slow. However there is something you the fans can do to help out by simply letting me know about a few things. I will post polls tonight and just let me know what you think about various things. Polls will be posted in the Literature section of http://www.weaverhall.com Again I apologize for the aggravation this is causing everyone but I can say that there is not one day that I don't work on solving this unfortunate delay. Apologizing does not absolve all my sins, I realize that but I hope you will all participate in the polls which will definitely help. Mistakes were done, lessons were learned and better things are to come. Cheers Sebastien February 1, 2006 What follows is a brief exchange of messages between Sebastian and myself on his Weaver Hall forum.

But doesn't it COST money to print up the lithos? Wouldn't that money be better well spent printing the Hard Cover? At this point, I think you'd be better off taking out a bank loan or a credit card. Sure it would be something you'd have to pay back for years to come, but then this whole situation would become solely YOUR problem and not ALL OF OURS. If you don't want to do either, then I highly suggest you sell all 88MPH rights and assets to Titan Books and let them publish the hard cover here in North America, as they did the softcover over in Europe. Since they obviously have their business plan together, maybe they could even get the ongoing series published as well. Unless, of course, you enjoy punishing the fans. To ask the fans to buy something additional (the lithos) just to finance something they already paid for, some as far back as over a year ago (I placed my order with Graham Crackers on 1/28/2005!), is wrong on so many levels.
Seb, you really need to stop dragging this out and come up with a definitive plan. It seems to me that you're just going on a wing and a prayer. If a lot of us fans who bought the hard cover decided to get together a file a lawsuit, you'd really be up the creek without a paddle. ===========================================
Posted: Wed Feb 01, 2006 2:52 am Bank loan and credit card = Out of the question. Debt equals business suicide. Selling 88MPH = Out of the question. The several tens of thousands lost the first time around are not going to be the end of my publishing career. I could have just not do any comics and save that cash. Why did I do comics instead ? Because I wanted to try, because I like Ghostbusters and because I think it could be done. But I was a rookie and made lots of stupid mistakes so cash was lost. Why do I pursue doing comics ? Because through all the mistakes experience was gained, because the business plan is much better now, because mistakes of the past won't be repeated. In a nutshell I know this can work the way it's supposed too. Peridocial Ghostbusters comics published at regular intervals. I am not going to let a difficult first time around let it be the end of this adventure. Other well known, and much bigger comic book companies, have closed in 2005, I fought hard not to be shut down so I am not done yet. People know the quality is there as the first mini-series was well accepted. Profit made on lithos goes to publish the hard cover, essentially it compensate for the low ordering. This is not charity as people get something they actually want, if people dont want them then I won't do them. Many other publishers are doing lithos. The profit they make on their lithos is surely helping consolidate their own financial plans. I am not making my problem your problem, I'm asking if lithographs are something people want. If so, it just so happens to help solve a problem. Now I know I can do better this time around. I'm not done with publishing yet. I do have a plan, Sony knows about it too, now I am coming out of a year long, very difficult journey, and in the following days and weeks people will know about the projects that are planned. Paul, you do have the right to be pissed about delays, although please don't insinuate that I am taking pleasure in punishing fans, or that I am deliberately trying to punish anyone. This is just being mean. Furthermore I fail to understand why the brandishing of possible lawsuits at this point. All I ask people is : Would you like lithos ? If so, cool, if not, cool too. If people want them it'll help solve the hard covers AND people get a product they would like to have, if they don't like lithos I'll still publish the hard cover and lithos will remain an idea. Cheers -=S=- (these messages were originally posted within the thread of messages here: http://www.weaverhall.com/viewtopic.php?t=242) March 29, 2006 Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2006 23:52:47 -0700 Subject: Hard Cover update From: noreply@weaverhall.com Hello All! I have to address the refund requests situation that has been growing lately. First of all, I can not blame anyone who is tired of this ridiculous delay, I am the first to admit it. I too would be pissed if a company was holding my money for that long. I have no other excuse than my own innexperience on handling pre-orders. I should have made sure that 100% of the required funds to publish were available. Now I know what went wrong and I know what to do to avoid such mistake for the future. What I am doing right now is working on getting financing to complete the necessary amount to publish the HC. Refund requests were low in the past and I was able to do them. Now there is a lot more and I can't absorb that many requests. It's a case of me making 1 step forward getting the funds to publish, and 2 steps back to refund customers who are perfectly legitimate in requesting a refund. This situation has no easy or simple solution and I apologize for it. Your money is not lost, the book will be published no matter what, you will recieve what you paid for. Best Sebastien May 15, 2006 Posted by: Sebastien Posted: Mon May 15, 2006 3:21 pm Location: Québec City, Canada Hello all, I am leaving Weaver Hall in the hands of Moderators until I return with good news. I have come to the conclusion that whatever I might say until then causes more trouble than anything. Even if I won't be reading, posting or visiting the place while I'm gone, I will be working out the final financial details. I will only come back when I have the release date for the hard cover. Best Sebastien (originally published at: http://www.weaverhall.com/viewtopic.php?t=328) May 16, 2006 Hardcover barely on life support The big news upon my return is Sebastien retreating from the public eye until he has good news about the GB hardcover, which may mean we never see Seb again. For those of you who want to complain, feel free to do-so in a constructive manner. For those of you who want to complain that Proton Charging made you buy the book (you know how you are) and now you feel ripped off and want to blame me, get stuffed. This book will have a low print run and is bound to be rare and valuable as we won't be re-printing it. (originally published on the 88MPH website - http://www.88mph.net) January 14, 2007 Posted: Sun Jan 14, 2007 10:51 pm By: Sebastien Location: Québec City, Canada Welcome to my first pseudo-blog [Smile] As many of you know 2005 and 2006 have been diffult years, both professionally and personally. I shall elaborate on the professional part as my personal life is not that interesting anyways. But first a little retrospect, so here's the short version : Back in 2001 when I started 88MPH I had visions of grandeur, as anyone who is energized and enthusiast about starting a business, even a small one. When I got the Transformers licence I thought about being a full fledged comic book studios, much like Devil's Due or Dreamwave. Publishing was fun and fulfilling, so I got Ghostbusters and Tron on top of Transformers. I also worked on getting other licences at the same time. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say, in retrospect I admit I was mad, or seriously delusional. A momentary lapse of reason caused by power trip euphoria, the sheer joy of being the sole decision maker on anything and everything. I was inexperienced and bitting more than I could possibly chew. Soon enough reality would sink in, big time. Things didn't go as planned with the Transformers books, Tron was becoming some sort of a "Spruce Goose" project, only Ghostbusters was going in the direction I wanted, albeit delayed. Nonetheless what was printed is exactly what I dreamed of it to be. Thanks to the vastly talented group of people who worked on each issue. However to solve all problems there was only two ways to go. Bankruptcy or Rationalization. Thankfully the later option prevailed. Now the reasons why Transformers and Tron didn't go as planned is a story for another day. Suffice it to say they were costly experiences where mistakes were made on both side of the fence. Finally Hasbro decided to file suit in January 2006, we counter-suited and the matter got resolved in November 2006 to 88MPH's satisfaction. While the details of the suit and counter-suit are public, the final resolution can't be publically disclosed. So there you have it, 2005 and 2006 mainly spent settling loose ends and various problems created by an overzealous entrepreneur who learned his lesson the hard way. But painless lessons are worthless lessons. Now what ? 3 Projects are on the drawing boards : Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters and more Ghostbusters. We only need a bit of luck and the support of YOU, the dedicated Ghostbusters fans. Cheers -=S=- (originally published here: http://www.weaverhall.com/viewtopic.php?t=404) January 28, 2007 It is now 2 YEARS since I placed the pre-order for the Legion hardcover through Graham Cracker Comics. February 14, 2007 Business News: 88mph Studios Posted By: Richard Roy, Director Of Ghostbusting Ops. at 6:47 PM EST Remember when we promoted the promised Legion tradeback? We barely do either. Throughout last year Sebastien seemed to keep telling us updates were on the way before his leave of absence. In a move that almost shocked me, he resurfaced around the end of the year or early this year informing us that his message board Weaver Hall would be reopening and the 88mph site would be back up. It felt like we would finally get some answers. It didn't take long for Sebastien to seem to fall back into his old habits. We were told an update was coming soon. This was about mid January. I never understood in the time it takes him to post that, that he can't or couldn't give a brief update. Something which has been expressed by fans time and time again. Recently it came to the point where Seb took control of his own board and locked two topics on the subject. He did leave us with this, of course. "Update next week with publishing date info and how to check your shipping address, etc. Those not interested in keeping their orders will have the info on how to do that that as well." That was written last week and about 2 days remain in this week if you're keeping track. While who knows how many of us wait for the tradeback, Chris, webmaster of Proton Charging provides a second clue that 88mph Studios may have helped licensed or did license an Ecto 1 poster. The artwork was originally (might it still be?) supposed to be the cover art for the tradeback. I hope this time the pre-order is skipped on the consumer level. By the way if you're wondering I pre-ordered from Graham Crackers comics on March 1, 2005. Anyone know how much interest about $30 USD could have earned by now? (originally published at: http://www.ghostbustersinternational.com/main.htm) March 1, 2007 Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2007 20:37:26 -0700 Subject: Ecto-1 Lithograph Now Available From: ostrogorsky@hotmail.com Hello All, The Ecto-1 Lithograph is now available at www.88mph.net This is not a pre-order. Lithographs are already printed and ready to ship. Best Regards Sebastien Up until this point in the page, I've not made any comments about any of the news items. I have to make a brief exception in this case. Why is it that Sebastien can get Ecto-1 lithographs printed and ready to ship now, but he can't do the same thing with the Legion hardcover that's he's been taking pre-orders for for over two years?!? You'll recall that about a year earlier (February 1, 2006) he proposed selling lithographs to finance the publication of the Legion hardcover. From what I know, he hasn't said anything about definitely selling lithographs until now - and *NOW* is when he has them ready to ship. I think he should have been focusing his time, money, and energy on getting the hardcovers printed instead of working on a new project (the lithographs) - even if he plans on using some of the money from it to get the hardcovers done. March 2, 2007 Ecto-1 lithographs available to buy 88mph has announced a lithograph print of Alvaro Pardo Sanchez's black and white rendering of the Ecto-1. As seen previously, PC made it a point to see one in person - they print is exceptionally nice, and comes in a protective hard plastic sleeve for shipping. The item as bears the official seal of approval from Columbia-Tristar and General Motors, who in recent years have gotten sticky about the use of the likenesses of their cars, old and new. According to the 88mph website, the print is $19.95US, plus shipping, which took about a week in my experience. (originally posted at Proton Charging) May 29, 2007 Sebastian sent out an e-mail via the 88MPH and Weaver Hall newsletters directing folks to this page in order to change their mailing address. This page also contains the following information:
UPDATE YOUR SHIPPING ADDRESS ONLINE Of course, you can only change your e-mail address on that page if you ordered the book directly from him. If you ordered from Graham Cracker Comics, you will have to contact them to change your mailing and e-mail addresses. July 3, 2007 Proton Charging: Softcover GB Legion TPB solicited The latest Previews catalog from Diamond Distributors is taking orders for a softcover trade paperback of the Ghostbusters: Legion comic series, by 88mph Studios. Orders placed for this catalog will arrive in October. It's on page 297 - ask your local comic shop. The listing says the TPB will feature comic series and the color version of the Zeddmore Factor (the ComicCon give-away comic by 88mph.) However, this doesn't appear to be a North American release of the Titan publishing TPB in the UK, as the listing also says the book (which features one of the Steve Kurth covers of the comic series - not the black, logo UK version) will feature extras, including character concept art. So, it would appear that this is closer to the hardcover version. No word yet if the hardcover will be shipped prior to the softcover version, or if the two have the same content. October 1, 2007 Silently posted to the 88mph.net main page was the following:
GHOSTBUSTERS LEGION TPB (This message was not posted to the 88MPH and Weaver Hall e-mail lists.) Sebastien Clavet (This news was also covered by Proton Charging. I'd ask why a lithograph was printed up, yet the book that I ordered almost 3 YEARS AGO wasn't, but it would just be pointless to ask.) December 2007 As of 12/26/2007 (probably earlier) Sebastien took down his Weaver Hall forum and redirected the url to the 88mph.net main page. Presumably, the Weaver Hall e-mail list was discontinued as well. (I noticed it on December 26th, folks over at the GB.net forum noticed it in January. Sebastien didn't post anything about the closure of the fourm on his website, so it is left to your imagination as to why he decided to close the forum.) January 13, 2008 Silently posted to the 88mph.net main page was the following (this message was not posted to the 88MPH e-mail list, which I assume Sebastien didn't discontinue):
LIMITED SERIES GHOSTBUSTERS LITHOGRAPHS (So apparently Sebastien decided that he'll pay for four individual lithographs to be printed up - five if you count the Ecto-1, yet the books that hundreds, if not thousands, of people pre-ordered back in 2005 is not worth paying to be printed - even though he already has all of the money from the pre-orders to use to have it printed!) January 28, 2008 It is now 3 YEARS since I placed the pre-order for the Legion hardcover through Graham Cracker Comics. I gave Sebastian enough time to publish the book, but it's obvious he scammed us all. I've been very patient, but I've reached my limit. So I have finally decided to ask John Robinson of Graham Cracker Comics for a refund, and thus close my active order. I received a check in the amount of $29.95 from John on January 31, 2008. I'm not asking for the refund because I urgently need the money back (though obviously I *DO* want it back since the book is AWOL). I'm asking for it because I don't like to leave unfinished business open for very long, and three years is WAY too long. It's about time I closed this matter and put it to rest. If the book is ever published, and John definitely has copies in his possession, by all means I want him to put one aside for me and let me know so I can reorder it. However, I will only do so when I know for a fact that he has the copies in stock. No more of this pre-order nonsense - at least not as far as anything from 88MPH or Sebastien is concerned. I will still continue to update this page from time to time to keep other folks abreast of the latest. I won't bother making notations of the future anniversaries of my pre-order date since the order is no longer active. | |||
