RGB DVD Set Update - Details, Video, Packaging

Permalink Oct. 24, 2008 at 10:41 PM , Categories: Site Update, RGB, DVD
I have just made some significant updates to The Real Ghostbusters: Complete Collection page to include the information you see below which TimeLife has just sent my way. The set, which you can order here, ships in about 3-4 short weeks. The coupon codes page has been updated as well, so go nab yourself a discount. The coupon codes page will be updated monthly with new coupon codes, so feel free to pass around the link.

Updated Complete Set Details
The online-exclusive set is comprised of 25 DVDs (that includes one bonus DVD), packaged in a specially-constructed firehouse-design box with lenticular panels, containing all 134 half-hour episodes of The Real Ghostbusters (including both 30-minute and 1-hour versions of "Deja Boo") and all 13 half-hour episodes of Slimer!. In total, that's all 140 The Real Ghostbusters stories, and all 33 Slimer! stories. The discs are collected in five separate volumes (each containing 5 DVDs, except for volume 5 which has 4 DVDs), each packaged inside a metal SteelBook case, with specially-designed cover art. Also included is a 52-page booklet with episode synopses, trivia, and art. As if that's not enough, there is over 13 hours of bonus material, all of which is detailed on The Real Ghostbusters: Complete Collection page. The bonus DVD alone contains nearly three hours of extra materials, including extended interviews, the never-before-seen promotional pilot (with commentary and storyboards), and more.

Individual Retail Releases
The five individual volumes will be released over the course of 12-18 months, starting in January 2009, at online and offline retailers. These sets will include all of the episodes and bonus content from the individual volumes included in the box set, but without the SteelBook packaging. Furthermore, the box set is the only way to get the Firehouse package, the 52-page booklet (though individual edited-down booklets will be made for each retail volume), and the bonus DVD which contains the promotional pilot.

New Exclusive Video Clip
An exclusive video clip of David Jerrold & Kathryn M. Drennan talking about the dynamic of the characters has been provided to me, which you can view below. I believe that this comes from one of the featurettes, and not the extended interviews.

Other sites have gotten their own video clip (each from a featurette it seems), so be sure to make the rounds to see more: Laura Summer at GB.net via YouTube (download), Dan Riba at RGB Online, Michael C. Gross at Proton Charging, and Len Janson & JMS at GB Fans.

Complete Set Packaging
Entire Collection Image

Many sites have uploaded the full resolution 4000x2316 image, so it's rather irrelevant for me to upload my copy. I'd rather just point you to those sites where you can download it: Proton Charging, Ghostbusters.net, and RGB Online. TVShowsOnDVD was given some exclusive close-ups of some individual items, and the cover art for each individual volume, which you can view here.

Just a quick post to let everyone know that right this minute (10/24/2008 at 10:45 PM EST) Proton Charging is having problems, so those links don't work. Once those problems are resolved, the links will work. In the meantime, check out the other links on the page.

That interview was great, a clip of Winston saying, "I sold my soul to a minor demon," followed by the line, Winston was the only normal one of the guys...pretty much classic. I can't wait for these to come out, like Christmas in November.

This was so cool to FINALLY see these goodies materialize after months of hearing/reading about it. My only critique thus far is I wish the brick portions of Firehouse box was colored a darker blue-grayish tint to reflect how the firehouse was seen mainly in the dusk, evening, & night shots of the show. I know that's pretty technical, but that's how I best remember it. Overall, a true fan couldn't ask for a better looking collection though, so I'll quit my bitchin'...for now. lol

Ghostdiva, my favorite editing choice so far is in the clip Proton Charging got. Michael C. Gross says that something was a piece of cake, and then it cuts to the clip of Slimer saying "Cake?" and looking for a piece on Janine's desk, to which she tells him that it was only a figure of speech. With what I've seen so far, Andy Mangels did a real great job writing the featurettes.

SonOfSamhain, there was some discussion about going with the nighttime color scheme, particularly on the front of the building, but thankfully the daytime color scheme was chosen. Yes, they went with the first season daytime color scheme as seen in the second image you posted. Personally, I was lobbying for the blue-green/light-green color scheme. That's the one that always springs to mind when I think of the building in RGB. I think it was used with more consistency in the latter seasons, though it did show up from time to time in the early seasons, such as in "Citizen Ghost".

Oh, and my only complaint with the packaging is the disc-over-disc storage. I hate having to pull one disc out just to get at another. I know that I'm not alone in feeling this way. To be fair, I have seen worse - MUCH worse - ways of storing discs (see: The Simpsons: Season 11 and What's Happening: The Complete Series).

spookcentral,

Yeah, I would've liked the light green color scheme as well. I felt adding color to the brick encompassed that mystique & "darkness" I loved about the show. Even if it's representative of the first season, the off-white brick just seems sort of..well..boring. (no offense)

Question for ya, Spook:

Do you know which disc in the set includes the music & effects tracks?--And exactly how are they assembled? (does each track have a title, etc.)

The white/slight-yellow color chosen seems rather "blah" to me, too.

I know what EVERY disc in the set has and doesn't have. When the set comes out, look at the end credits page at the back of the booklet and you'll see my Design Consultant and Research/Materials Contribution credits.

So, I know lots of details about the set - heck, I've known about the set since the beginning of May - but unless I'm given specific permission by TimeLife to post something, I don't. I just don't want to take the chance of getting into trouble and pissing TimeLife off, thus lose the nice things that they're doing, and going to be doing, for me. After the set is released, I can then post a lot of the stuff I have as most of it will be public knowledge at that point.

Getting back to your question... you seem to be a little confused as to what a music & effects track is. It's simply an alternate audio track for the episode that contains everything from the regular audio track, except for the voices. On the DVDs there will be some episodes that have them, and you can switch between the regular episode audio track or the music & effects audio track. The complete set breakdown that I was given at the beginning of September shows that at least one episode on EVERY disc will have a music & effects track.

Paul, your insight into the production process of this collection is most appreciated. I have one observation/question that has been in the forefront of my mind. I noticed that the included booklet lists the episodes in an order that doesn't coincide with the airdate order (rather they seem to indicate production numbers alongside the episodes). Can this fact be taken to mean that the episodes will appear in the same order throughout the collection? If you don't know or can't say, I will understand.

Scott

The episodes are, for the most part, in production order, with the first and last season being airdate order. Some tweaking was made here and there to better reflect series continuity. The notice that you'll see near the back of the booklet will let the customers know this:

"To ensure that no continuity errors impede your enjoyment of these DVDs, we have meticulously gone through the episodes placing them in the order in which we feel best reflects the production and storyline continuity of the series. Because some episodes aired out of order, we avoided using air dates for anything other than episode numbering."

I may put up the complete list of episodes in order later today or this week, and hope that TimeLife doesn't get mad at me for doing it. I figure that it's only a list of episodes, so they shouldn't be mad. If I posted the full set breakdown, then they would have good reason to be mad.

Thank you very much. That news brought a smile to my face, particularly where the Dr. Basingame/Peter's father story arcs are concerned. The attention to detail on Time-Life's part, and those involved, is exactly what an obsessive-compulsive fan of the series has been hoping for (mainly me)! I can honestly say that one of the first things I noticed, aside from the dual appearances of Janine on the set, was the use of the maroon color on Ray's uniform for volume 5. I certainly agree with you about the changes that occurred throughout the series, but they existed and true fans will appreciate the acknowledgement of those changes. These details more than anything else assured me of the care that went into this set.

Paul,

I greatly appreaciate your incite on the collection & actually I'm not that confused about the music & effects track. Thanks to your GB2 score posting on this site, I figured it'd be something similar to that. Time Life was never clear in their description of how that portion would be set up, so I wasn't sure if it would be featured like a playlist on one of the disc with titles, etc. The background music is the #1 reason why I said I HAD TO own this collection. I know the sound effects audio will be included with the music, which I don't mind, but can you say if EVERY song used throughout the series is featured in this portion or is it just the songs/effects designated for the episodes that are chosen by Andy Mangles for the music & effects portion?

Sort of like what my buddy Zackgb did here (minus the splicing of course)--And for EVERY song ever used in the show.

Scott - Yes, it can be said that whatever wrong is found with the set, it won't be due to lack of care on the part of Andy Mangels or any of the main folks involved with the set.

SonOfSamhain - What ever music is used in each episode that has a M&E track is what you'll hear.
