WINDOWS 2000 SOFTWARE
Here are many popular software programs that I found to be the best in their field. All will work in Windows 2000. Some of them will work in other versions of Windows, but I make no guarantees. Clicking on the program name will take you to its homepage (if it has one). If I've listed a version number and size, then you can click on that to download the program file itself. Please note that programs with a (Not Current) notation after their listing are purposely not the current version of the program. This is because I found the current version to be inferior to the version listed here. For the current version, go to the program's homepage.
Please note that I did not write any of the programs listed on this page, so please do not contact me for program support. For program support, contact the program's author (he/she should be mentioned in the program's documentation).
REGISTRATION "PATCHES" - These files will allow you to use many of the shareware programs listed below as if they were the full registered version. The files are not intended to be used as an aid to software piracy, but rather as a tool for allowing users (especially beta testers like me) to evaluate software over a longer period of time or to their fullest extent (it's hard to test out a program if most of its features are locked). If you like a program and plan to keep it, I strongly encouraged you to register it. The author deserves to be paid for his/her work. Most of these files include plain text readme files with a .nfo extension. Open this file in your text editor (such as Notepad) to read important information about the usage of the "patch". Some of the "registration patch" links will point to pages which display adult banners. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about this because I don't run these sites. IMPORTANT: BEWARE OF A FILE NAMED "START.EXE" THAT IS OFTEN BUNDLED IN THE ZIP FILES YOU'LL FIND ON THESE SITES. IT'S A VIRUS. IT'S SAFE TO OPEN THE ZIP FILE AND DELETE START.EXE, JUST AS LONG AS YOU DON'T RUN IT. ALL THE OTHER FILES IN THE ZIP SHOULD BE SAFE.

Don't Download These Programs
* 2000/XP Lite - It uninstalled stuff I didn't want to (like Windows Media Player 6.4) and would not let me reinstall it. It also messed up my computer because it removed files that other programs needed as well.
|
REQUIRED COMPONENTS
If you get an error message from one of the programs listed on this page saying that a particular file is missing (or something like that), you should check out SnapFiles' Missing Files page. If a program says that a .dll file is missing, the most common .dll files can be found at DLL-Files.
WINDOWS UPDATES
It is suggested that you install these in this order, though I don't know if the order really matters.
- Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 - internet install (610 Kb + 15 Mb) / full version (132 Mb) - This is the latest service pack for Windows 2000. It includes all the updates from service packs 1-3.
NOTE: You can order a copy of the full version on a CD from Microsoft, but I should warn you that it is nothing more than a cheap CD-R with the exact same file as the full download, and a few additional files and readmes that are of no use to the average user. Save the $10 and download it yourself and burn it to your own CD-R. I was hoping the Microsoft CD would have contained all of the source files already extracted, so that the installer would not have to put copies on my hard drive (using up 132MB of space) in case Windows needed to replace a corrupt file with the original.
- Windows 2000 Update Rollup 1 for Service Pack 4 (31.9 Mb, 9/13/2005). (REQUIRES WINDOWS 2000 SERVICE PACK 4) (Homepage, Download Homepage) The Update Rollup contains:
-- All security updates produced for Windows 2000 between the time SP4 was released and April 30, 2005, when the contents of the Update Rollup were finalized for testing by Microsoft.
-- A number of updates that help increase system security and reliability, reduce support costs, and support the current generation of PC hardware.
No Future Service Packs: Microsoft believes the Update Rollup meets customer needs more effectively and with less disruption than a new service pack, and there will be no Service Pack 5 (SP5) for Windows 2000. SP4 becomes the final service pack for Windows 2000.
- Internet Explorer - Ver. 6.0 SP1 - You should not use this "browser" for actual internet web browsing (it's not a browser, it's a giant security hole in Windows). I am *ONLY* listing it on this page because (1) it fixes some security holes in Windows (the same ones it caused in the first place, no doubt), and (2) some of the programs on this page require something more current than the v5.0 that comes with Windows 2000. You also should not use the included Outlook Express e-mail program, as it's another security hole masquerading as a useful program. Follow these directions so that you can download the complete IE, in case you want to save it for future use (or because Microsoft will no longer make a particular version available for download in the future). (This information came from Donny Broome's website, but it can also be found on the Microsoft website)
- Download the installer from the "Ver. 6.0 SP1" link above.
- Place the downloaded setup file here: C:\Downloads (Create this folder if necessary.)
- Click Start | Run and type the command below into the Open field, and then click OK. NOTE: Use the EXACT syntax shown below, including the quotation marks. Copying the text below and pasting it into the Open field is recommended.
"C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"
- You will be presented with the license agreement dialog box. Choose 'I accept the agreement' and then click Next.
- After the setup routine begins, you will be given these two options:
(a) Choose the operating system(s) that you desire to use Internet Explorer with.
(b) Choose a location to download the files to.
NOTE: Size of download will vary: Windows 98 = 19.3 MB, Windows NT = 19.1 MB, Windows 2000/XP = 11.3 MB, Windows ME = 12.7 MB, All Windows Operating Systems = 50.0 MB.
- Click the Next button to proceed. If for some reason the download process gets interrupted, you can resume the download process by executing the same command used in the beginning.
- Once you've downloaded the setup files for Internet Explorer, you can install Internet Explorer by double-clicking the file named ie6setup.exe located in the download folder. (NOTE: I've noticed that if I'm connected to the internet when I run the install, it still tries to access Microsoft's server, but if I pull the plug on my router, then obviously it can't and it installs fine.) Additionally, the files in this folder can be burned onto a CD and used to install Internet Explorer onto computers with operating systems corresponding to the type of download selected at the beginning of this process.
You can also download full setup bundles (with all operating system versions) of most versions of Internet Explorer at PlanetMirror (might be German version) and Evolt.
- DirectX - Get the "Redist" which is the full package so you don't have to be connected to the internet to install it - the link is at the bottom of the "End User Runtime" download page under "Additional Information" - If you play any sort of games or do anything with graphics, then you'll want to upgrade to the latest version of DirectX.
SECURITY
Normally I won't separate the programs on this page into genres, mostly because some programs are hard to define. However, I made an exception for programs that relate to Windows' security because these are vitally important and should be among the first programs you install on your computer. This section exludes cookie and registry cleaners (and stuff of that nature) as those relate more to privacy and clean-up, and not security. Security links can be found in the Computer Resources section of my Links page.
OFF&ON & RUN ONCE PROGRAMS These programs turn off & on something in Windows that if left running, usually leaves a security hole that could be exploited. As such, you should only need to run these programs once, to turn off the offending item. Once off, you shouldn't have to run these programs again (unless you find that you need to turn it back on). There might also be other types of programs listed below that, although they don't turn anything off and on, only need to be run once as well.
- Shoot The Messenger - Windows NT, 2000, and XP hide an Internet server that is running by default. It receives and accepts, among other things, unsolicited network messages that cause pop-up dialog boxes to appear on the desktop. Internet spammers have discovered this and are spraying pop-up spam across the Internet. The Windows Messenger server should never have been running by default, and Microsoft has finally fixed that in Windows 2003, but users of previous Windows need to take responsibility for this themselves. (I DON'T PERSONALLY USE THIS PROGRAM AS I KNOW HOW TO MANUALLY DISABLE THE MESSENGER SERVICE IN WINDOWS' ADMINISTRATOR TOOLS: SERVICES. HOWEVER, FOR THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT AS KNOWLEDGABLE AS ME, I'VE ADDED THIS PROGRAM.)
FIREWALL
- Filseclab Personal Firewall Professional Edition (aka XFilter) - Protect your PC from unsavory Internet activity. This easy-to-use security utility sets up a personal firewall that's particularly well suited to DSL and cable modem users. A computer with such an always-on connection has a permanent IP address, which makes it especially vulnerable to information theft and other attacks. Not only can you filter all incoming traffic (though the use of rules for individual ports and protocols), but you can filter outgoing traffic as well.
* NOTE: This program installs some unnecessary junk and an advertisement. At the end of the install, *BEFORE* you press the button to reboot, run my Clean-Up .bat file to remove this junk. (The .bat file is a plain text file, so feel free to open it up in Notepad and see what's being deleted. The default.html file is part of the clean-up process and must be in the same location as the .bat file when you run it.)
* NOTE: One of the nice things about my clean-up file is that it eliminates an extra piece of software that is installed (and automatically given permission to access the internet!) even if you tell the installer that you don't want it. At the last step of the install you will see this:
Filseclab (FILMSG.EXE) is an important program of this software, it is used to receive the online messages, check available version, test download speed etc. The online functions need to access Internet, if you do not want it, you can disable the online functions.
[] Enable Filseclab Messenger's online functions.
[] I want to sign up now, after complete the sign up, you will get better technology support.
Even if you uncheck both boxes, the Messenger is installed and automatically given permission to access the internet: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Filseclab\FilMsg.exe (Anytime); via protocol All, Port (all), wants to access Anynet; Port (All) -> Pass." And the reasoning behind why it is allowed access is this: "This program signed by Filseclab, it is trusted."
* NOTE: Another nice thing about my clean-up file is that it eliminates the "banner ad" on the main window of the program. The ad is made up of the files found here: C:\Program Files\Filseclab\xfilter\online\. You can easily "hide" the ad by editing the html file (I made a new file as part of the clean-up file) and deleting all of the other files in the directory. The firewall programs needs to be exited and restarted in order to see the changes you made.
* NOTE: One more thing that my clean-up file handles is the deletion of several unnecessary programs (and their associated start menu shortcuts). All of these programs are supposedly used (and installed) by all of Filseclab's products, but there's no need for them (especially with one being added to Windows' StartUp!).

ANTI-VIRUS
- AntiVir Personal Edition - Ver. 6.32.00.51 (9.0 Mb) A freeware virus scanner and removal tool. It's small, uses up very little system resources, and does the job just as well as the big bloated overpriced offerings from Norton and McAfee.
NOTE: Use the Eicar test file to test the program's effectiveness on your system.
NOTE: For information on how to activate AntiVirGuard, read this message from the official support forum.
NOTE: Do not let notifier.exe access the internet (and if possible delete it?) because it will display an ad for the Pro version. It did this to me once, and I'm sure that it will do it again. When updating via internet, the program will pop up a screen complaining about the notifier not being allowed access, ignore what it says. It's a bunch of lies.
ANTI-SPYWARE
- SpyBot Search & Destroy - A spyware scanner and removal tool. (alt homepage url)
- Ad-Aware SE - A spyware scanner and removal tool. To be more precise, it's a program designed to provide advanced protection from known Data-mining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, selected traditional Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components. (find Pro versions)
NOTE: The Personal version is free. The Plus and Professional versions cost money. The free version doesn't let you have it run a scan at startup (the Pro version does).
NOTE: The Plus and Professional versions include Ad-Watch, which is a real time monitor that runs silently in the background, watching for Malware/parasites that try to install on or modify your system. It should be noted that in v1.05 Ad-Watch was absolutely useless! It let all sorts of garbage onto my system that Ad-Aware had to take care of. Hopefully it'll improve in future versions.
OTHER
- Starter - (alt url) - Allows you to view and manage all the programs that start automatically whenever Windows boots. It lists all the hidden registry entries, as well as the common Startup Folder items. You can choose to safely disable selected entries, edit them or delete them altogether (if you know what you're doing). Expert users can even add their own entries. Plus it lists currently running processes (just like Windows' own Task Manager), and allows you to edit Windows' Services. Nice interface, easy to use, no documentation though (but hardly needed).
APPLICATIONS
MULTIMEDIA CODECS
- K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (alt url #1 #2 #3) - Support Forum - These codecs will allow you to play many different video and audio formats on your computer. For a full list of what is in this codec pack, check out the homepage. The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a combination of the latest versions of three codec packs: K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, and Real Alternative. It includes three multimedia players: Media Player Classic, BSplayer, and GDivX Zenith (which contains no adware junk, unlike the version available to download elsewhere from the internet). In my opinion, Media Player Classic is the best and the last two are skinnable garbage which are best left uninstalled. QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install QuickTime Player. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages. The QuickTime plugins include iPIX and QuickTimeVR. The QuickTime Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, SeaMonkey, Mozilla and Netscape. Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer or RealOne Player. Supported are: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp). It also supports RealMedia content that is embedded in webpages. RealMedia .smi and .smil files are not fully supported, only the first part will usually be played. This is a limitation of the current Media Player Classic. The RealMedia Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, SeaMonkey, Mozilla and Netscape. (The 3ivx splitter is what can play .mp4 files.)
NOTE: If you plan to install this more then once, you should make a
silent installation (alt url). Personally, I use the default settings, though with all "tools" unchecked and the "check for updates" option at very bottom of next screen unchecked as well.
- Windows Media Lite (alt url #1 #2 #3) - Support Forum - From the same people who bring you the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Includes the following:
* Windows Media codecs
With these you can play Windows Media files in almost every media player. This is the only component of WML that is also included in the Mega Codec Pack.
* Windows Media Format runtimes
Required for playing Windows Media files. It is not needed nor recommended to install this if you have Window Media Player 7/9/10 installed.
* Windows Media Player core components and IE plugin
This is specially for those people who have removed Windows Media Player 7/9/10 from Windows, for example using tools like nLite or XPlite. This is also useful for Windows 2000 users who only have WMP 6.4 and don't want to install a newer version. This will only install a few core files of WMP, not the whole player. After installing this (and the Windows Media Format runtimes) you should be able to play Windows Media content in Internet Explorer. It is not needed nor recommended to install this if you already have Window Media Player 7/9/10 installed.
* Windows Media plugin for Firefox/SeaMonkey/Mozilla/Netscape/Opera
For playing Windows Media in those browsers. Requires the Windows Media Format runtimes and the Windows Media Player core components to be installed.
AUCTION TOOLS
- Yahoo! Auctions - Yahoo! Seller's Manager - If you sell on Yahoo! Auctions, this program will help you to create and manage your auctions quickly and more efficiently than on the website. You can create auction listings in seconds from within the program, then submit them all in one batch when you're connected to the Internet.
NOTE: I have put together an extensive list of notes for the program and auction service that I highly suggest you read first.
GAMES
- BlasterBall 2 Deluxe (3.2 Mb) - Remember the Atari 2600 classic Breakout? It was a simple game in which you controlled a paddle with which you hit a ball into a wall of bricks. The bricks you hit would disappear and when you hit them all, you'd go onto the next level in which you'd do the same thing all over again. In the mid-1980's there was a game called Arkanoid which "modernized" this formula by adding power-ups that would increase/decrease the size of your paddle, let you shoot lazers at the bricks, multiply the ball, and do lots more things. BlasterBall is beautifully enhanced version of Arkanoid. BlasterBall 2 Deluxe is exactly the same as Blasterball 2: Revolution, but with a different registration routine. (Registration Patch)
After installation, go into Control Panel - WildTangent Control Panel. Click on the Automatic Updater tab and uncheck the "Automatic Updater Service Enabled" box. You can also set the Logfile Logging Level to Minimal. This should stop the game from going online, phoning home, etc. If not, get yourself a firewall and tell it not to allow "wcmdmgr.exe" to access the internet.
EMULATORS AND ROM TOOLS - The emulators listed below let you play ROM files, which are the equivalent of video game cartridges. Emulators for all sorts of systems can be found here (in some cases this site has more recent versions of the emulators below than the official sites do - GENS is a prime example).
- Flash Advance Toolkit (F.A.T) (click on Tools on the left-side menu) - A multi-purpose Flash Advance (Gameboy Advance rom) tool which includes EEPROM patching, intro removing, removing FF's, and header editing.
- Jnes - Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Comes loaded with Game Genie cheats for MANY games. Cheat file updates can be found here.
- Kega - Genesis/Megadrive (GEN), Master System, Game Gear, Sega CD. It will only run under a 16-bit color display setting. So, for convience, you should also get DepthSwitcher 1.0, which allows you to run programs requiring a specific color depth without manually having to switch to it yourself. It will set your color depth back after you close the program.
An alternative to Kega is Gens, which is what I used to use. It emulates Genesis/Megadrive (GEN), Sega 32X, and Sega CD. However, the reason I stopped using it is because the joypad configuration started acting flaky and I could not find any way to fix it.
- Project64 - Nintendo 64 (N64). Comes loaded with Game Shark cheats for MANY games. Cheat file updates can be found here. A Hint About Using Cheats: For codes that have options, when using them, doubleclick on the (=>?) to see the options menu.
Adding/Editing/Deleting Cheats In order to add Game Shark codes/cheats (or edit/delete the existing ones), you need to enable advanced mode. Go into Options, Settings, and then Options. Uncheck "Hide Advanced Settings" and click OK.If you're using the Rom Browser, you can access the cheats menu by right-clicking on the rom/game you want and selecting Edit Cheats from the menu that pops up. Otherwise you'll need to load the rom (as you would to play it) and then go into System, Cheats in order to access them. Alternatively, you could press CTRL+C instead of going into the System menu. In the cheats menu window, right-click on a cheat to edit or delete it. Right-click anywhere in the white part of the window to add a new cheat. In the "Name" field add the name of the cheat, like "Infinite Lives" or "All Levels" or whatever else. You can put codes into groups by using a forward slash in the name. For example, "Infinite Ammo\Pistol" and "Infinite Ammo\Rocket Launcher" would put these two codes named "Pistol" and "Rocket Launcher" into a group/folder called "Infinite Ammo". You can use more forward slashes to create deeper folder trees. In the "Code" field type the code(s). Make sure the Code is written in this format [xxxxxxxx *space* xxxx] with no spaces at the end of the code(s). You can put up to 100 codes in per cheat. If your code has question marks "??" in the last four digits (the value spot) to allow for different options (such as a level select code that has specific digits for each level), you can enter the code in with the question marks intact. In the "Options" field you type in the digits to replace the question marks in your code, followed by a space, then you type in the text that will appear in your menu for that option. Each option (digits/value and label) goes on it's own line. For example [09 Level 9] and [0A Level 10] would go onto two lines to give us options to start on levels 9 and 10 respectively. The "Notes" field is an optional place to write notes for the code. Once you have everything typed in, click "Add Cheat". If "Add Cheat" is still greyed out, it means that there is some errors in the Code or Options portions of your cheat. For screenshots of all of the above, click here.
- Snes9x - Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).
- VisualBoy Advance - GameBoy (GB), GameBoy Color (GBC), and GameBoy Advance (GBA). Note #1: The "Save Game" directory is also where it will store the cheat files. Note #2: If two different games have the same exact file name, even if they're for different systems and have different file extensions, the emulator will try to use the same cheat file for both of them, which will cause the cheat file to be erased.
SITES THAT HAVE ROMS FILES
- Google Search: r0ms (some sites will purposely replace the O with a zero to hide their sites a little bit)
- ROM World - NES, SNES, GEN, and more.
- EmuParadise - NES, SNES, GEN, GBC, GBA (ALL), N64, complete sets of roms, and more.
- EMU-Russia - NES, SNES, GEN, GB, GBC, and more.
- The Old Computer Dot Com - NES.
- ROM Nation - NES, SNES, GEN, and more.
- Wiked Host - NES, SNES, GEN, GB, GBC, GBA, N64, and more. (NOT LATEST GBA) (NOTE: Click one direct link and agree to the policy, then all direct links will work - reload if necessary.)
HARDWARE DRIVERS / UPGRADES FOR COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE
- ATI All-In-Wonder 128 - Updates for the display driver and the multimedia center.
- Easy CD Creator - Updates for this CD burning software.
- WinDVD Patch - v2.6.4 (3.2 Mb) - This patch will update your WinDVD 2000 (aka version 2) program (it might not work on trial versions). This will correct many bugs, such as screen captures (done by pressing "P" on your keyboard) being put into the wrong directory and overwriting each other, and a problem I had with getting DVD video to play in PC Friendly (though Direct-X 8 might have helped too). This patch came from the now-defunct WinDVD Download Zone, which was a great site for people using old versions of WinDVD.
