Annie came to Hollywood and continued her theater education at the California Institute of the Arts. Several months later, she appeared in "Cymbeline" and "The Merchant of Venice" at the Los Angeles Globe Theatre. Annie joined the road company of "Charley's Aunt," with Vincent Price and Roddy McDowall. When the troupe returned to Los Angeles, McDowall was influential in introducing Potts to casting directors and her career took off.

During the television season, Potts starred as Louanne Johnson, the tough Marine-turned-inner-city teacher, on ABC's highly acclaimed dramatic series, "Dangerous Minds." Her other major television credits include her role as gourmet chef Dana Palladino on the comedy series, "Love & War," for which she received an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. She also starred for seven successful seasons as Mary Jo Shivey on the wildly successful sitcom, "Designing Women." Most recently she worked with Tim Curry to help produce a new sit-com "Over the Top" in which they both had starring roles. Rumor has it that she may be working on another television project now that 'Top' has been cancelled by ABC. Not limited to just television, Potts has appeared in a long list of varied and popular feature films. After making her film debut in "King of the Gypsies," she went on to appear in "Ghostbusters" and "Ghostbusters II,", "Pretty in Pink," "Crimes of Passion," "Pass the Ammo," "Who's Harry Crumb?" "Breaking the Rules," "Texasville" and "Toy Story."

Potts received a Genie Award -- the Canadian equivalent of an Academy Award -- for best performance by a foreign actress for her starring role in the comedy film, "Heartaches." She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her feature debut role in "Corvette Summer."
